Geologic Road Log for Arches NP:
These are two of the most commonly seen rock units in Arches NP. The Slick Rock Member of the Entrada Sandstone is the massive, wind blown sand deposit--you can see a thicker layer in the background of this photo on the left, relative to the top of Balanced Rock. Underneath is the Dewey Bridge Member of the Carmel Formation. The Dewey Bridge used to be assigned as a member of the Entrada, but later was traced to the Carmel. As an aside, the original Dewey Bridge crossed the Colorado River, several tens of miles NE of Moab, UT. Later it burned down and was replaced by a better bridge. I drove over it in 1977 with my father and our popup trailer. We wondered if it were even possible to fit. Click here to see a digitized slide of that bridge.
